Embracing Sustainability: ISNHS Celebrates World Home Economics Day

The Ilocos Sur National High School celebrated World Home Economics Day with great enthusiasm and purpose, embracing this year’s theme, “Tackling Consumption for a Better World.” Students and teachers from the TLE department led various activities that highlighted the importance of mindful consumption and sustainable living. From selling diy keychains and bracelets, exhibits, and etc. The celebration aimed to raise awareness on making responsible choices when it comes to food, resources, and energy use—emphasizing that even small actions can create a big impact in building a better world.

World Home Economics Day is a meaningful event as it reminds us of the role of Home Economics in shaping responsible, skilled, and value-driven individuals. By focusing on sustainable practices and wise consumption, the event empowers students to become agents of change within their homes and communities. It also highlights the relevance of Home Economics in today’s world, where overconsumption and waste are major issues. The celebration at ISNHS was not only educational but also inspiring, encouraging everyone to live with intention, care, and responsibility for the planet and future generations.

Exploring ICT: My Journey in Web Design and Networking

As a Junior High School student, the fourth quarter in ICT has been a journey filled with new knowledge, challenges, and opportunities for growth.

Throughout the quarter, I discovered how to use Microsoft FrontPage to design simple websites. I learned how to add texts, images, and links to make my web pages more interactive. We also explored the function of LAN cables and how important they are in connecting devices in a network. I discovered the different types of network cables and the types of networks such as Local Area Network (LAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), Private Area Network (PAN), and Campus Area Network (CAN). Understanding what a network is and how it helps in communication and data sharing really gave me a better appreciation of how technology connects people.

One of the challenges I encountered was designing web pages using Microsoft FrontPage. Sometimes, it was hard to drag and place photos exactly where I wanted them. I struggled with aligning elements, and sometimes the layout didn’t turn out the way I imagined it. It was frustrating at times because I couldn’t fully achieve the design I had in mind.

To overcome these challenges, I asked for help from my teacher and classmates. Their guidance helped me understand how to better use the tools in Microsoft FrontPage. I also took the initiative to explore and experiment with the different functions and elements within the software. This hands-on experience helped me improve little by little and become more confident in using the program.

Moving forward, I will continue to deepen my knowledge and skills in using Microsoft FrontPage and other web design tools. I want to improve my ability to design more professional-looking web pages and become more familiar with networking concepts. I believe that with continuous practice and learning, I will be able to achieve my goals in ICT.

Embracing Uncertainty: A Journey of Exploration, Growth, and Self-Discovery

Fifteen years from now, I hope to look back at a life filled with exploration and growth. Right now, I want to explore so many different paths, but that desire often leaves me feeling lost and overwhelmed. There’s a constant fear that if I try to do too much, I might end up being nothing at all. “Which path should I choose?” is a question that echoes in my mind more often than I’d like to admit. The thought of becoming a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none terrifies me, and yet, I can’t help but be drawn to everything that sparks even the smallest flame of curiosity.

What if, in chasing every dream, I end up doing none of them well? What if I spread myself too thin, chasing after fleeting passions, only to find myself lost and empty fifteen years from now? These are the fears that follow me—but maybe that’s okay. Maybe I don’t need to have it all figured out right now. What I love today might not be what I love tomorrow, and that’s perfectly fine. Instead of forcing myself into one path just to feel secure, I’m learning to give myself permission to explore, to wander, to learn without the pressure of being the best.

So, in fifteen years, I hope to be someone who embraced uncertainty with courage. I may not end up being one specific thing, but I will be a collection of all the things I dared to love. I will be a student of life, shaped by every experience, every failure, and every success. I will have lived not with the goal of perfection, but with the goal of discovery—and in doing so, I will have found my own unique path.

In the next 15 years, I hope to be dedicated to a career that is aligned with my passion and my values—something that brings both purpose and joy into my life. Beyond my work, I hope to live a peaceful and healthy life with my family, surrounded by love and support. I want to build a life where balance exists—not just between career and home, but within myself. A life where I feel whole, even in my imperfections, and proud of the journey I chose to take.

Celebrating Women's Month: A Call for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society

Every March, we celebrate Women's Month, a time to honor the achievements and contributions of women throughout history and in our present day. It serves as a reminder of the progress we've made in promoting gender equaality, while also acknowledging the challenges that still exist. This year’s theme, “WE for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society,” emphasizes the collective responsibility of all individuals—regardless of gender—to work together towards a more just and equal world.

The theme highlights that gender equality is not solely a women’s issue; it is a societal concern that benefits everyone. Inclusivity means creating spaces where all voices are heard, respected, and valued. When we break down gender-based barriers and challenge stereotypes, we empower not just women, but entire comunities. It promotes diversity, strengthens collaboration, and builds more compassionate and innovative environments in schools, workplaces, and society as a whole.

“WE for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society” is a call to action. It invites each of us to reflect on our role in shaping a future where everyone has equal opportunities regardless of gender. By advocating for policy changes, educating others, and standing against discrimination, we can all contribute to a society that celebrates equity and inclusiveness—not just in March, but every day of the year.

The Kannawidan Festival: Celebrating the Heritage of Ilocos Sur

The Kannawidan Festival, held annually in Ilocos Sur, is a celebration of the province's rich cultural heritage and history. The name “Kannawidan” is derived from the Ilocano word for “heritage,” reflecting the festival's central focus on preserving and showcasing traditional practices, arts, and values. Held every last week of January, the event commemorates the foundation of Ilocos Sur and honors its patron saint, St. William the Hermit. Through a variety of cultural performances, handicraft exhibitions, and traditional culinary showcases, the festival becomes a platform for the province’s diverse communities to display their unique customs and creativity, ensuring that these cultural elements are passed on to future generations.

Apart from preserving culture, the Kannawidan Festival serves as a unifying event for the people of Ilocos Sur. It brings together residents from different municipalities to celebrete their shared identity and history. The festivities feature street dances, local sports competitions, beauty pageants, and trade fairs, all of which foster a sense of community pride and solidarity. The sense of togetherness cultivated during the festival is invaluable, as it strengthens the social bonds within the province and encourages locals to take pride in their roots. Aditionally, the involvement of local artisans, farmers, and businesses in the festival highlights the importance of supporting the region’s economy and promoting sustainable, locally-made products.

The festival also plays a significant role in boosting tourism and economic growth in the region. Ilocos Sur, partiularly the historical city of Vigan, attracts both local and international visitors due to its rich heritage, and the Kannawidan Festival adds an extra layer of appeal. Through the grand trade fairs, where visitors can purchase local goods such as the famous Ilocos vinegar, empanada, and handwoven inabel fabric, the festival supports local businesses and provides economic opportunities. It also allows the province to showcase its cultural tourism potential, drawing attention to the province’s historical significance and natural beauty. As such, the Kannawidan Festival is a celebration not just of Ilocos Sur’s past, but of its continuing cultural and economic vitality.

Beyond the Chocolate and flowers: Unpacking the True Essence of Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day. The 14th of February. The day is awash in red, pink, and chocolate – but what's the real story behind the commercialized holiday? It's more than just candy hearts and romantic dinners; it's a day dedicated to love and affection in all its forms. It's a chance to pause and appreciate the people who enrich our lives.

The history is fascinating, a blend of legend and tradition. Some say it's named after Saint Valentine, a priest who defied Emperor Claudius's ban on marriage for young men, secretly uniting couples and ultimately paying the price with his life. Another theory points to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration, as a precursor. Regardless of its exact origins, the holiday has evolved over centuries, weaving together pagan and Christian influences to become the celebration we know today.
In our busy lives, we often forget to truly cherish our relationships. Valentine's Day serves as a powerful reminder to nurture those connections – romantic, familial, or platonic. It's a time to express gratitude and appreciation for the people who matter most. Love, in all its forms, is a fundamental human need, and this day offers a structured opportunity to celebrate it. It's not about extravagant displays, but about genuine connection. A small, thoughtful gesture can speak volumes.

The ways people celebrate Valentine's Day vary widely across cultures. In Japan, women traditionally give chocolates to men, with a reciprocal gift exchange on White Day a month later. In Finland, it's known as "Friend's Day," emphasizing the importance of friendship. The common threads, however, are expressions of affection – gift-giving, romantic dinners, acts of service, and quality time.
Personally, I find the greatest expression of love lies in quality time and thoughtful gifts. Sharing meaningful moments – a deep conversation, a shared adventure, or simply enjoying each other's company – creates lasting bonds. Gifts, too, hold significance, not for their monetary value, but for the thoughtfulness behind them. A small, well-chosen present can bring immense joy.
Ultimately, Valentine's Day is a reminder to celebrate the connections that make our lives rich and fulfilling. It's about expressing love and appreciation, in whatever way feels most authentic. It's a chance to make those we care about feel seen, heard, and valued. And that, I believe, is the true essence of the holiday.
